The Course

5.75 miles
1,165' climbing, 1,165' descending
100% trail (singletrack and skinny doubletrack)
Elevation Min/Max: 2,159' / 2,896'

A great race for beginners or seasoned trail runners alike.  Beginners will appreciate the short course with a pit stop just about halfway through and the sense of accomplishment in tackling these challenging trails.  Veteran runners will still find this course tough as the climbs are steep and the descents keep you on your toes - it's a great course for hitting some extra high heart rates and getting good threshold training in a fun environment.

Highlights: fall leaf color, fun and technical trails, nice vantage points of nearby mountains and coves, a few bridged creek crossings, lots of hype and encouragement.

The Course Rundown:
Starting at the low point of the course, you'll head uphill where you'll have about a half mile of wider track to get in position.  You'll enter the rhododendron lined Grassy Creek Trail.  Climbing to the first high point of the course at around 2,600', you'll take a right onto the lower Sycamore Cove Trail that winds quickly back down the cove over many roots and over a bridge.  You'll hang a right for a short steep section of Starens Branch Trail (see photo) and then up Thrift Cove Trail.  This climb continues to almost 2,900' then levels out and descends lower Black Mountain Trail - a local's favorite.  This ripping steep descent leads you right to the finish!

Parking

Parking is located near the start of the race - at the ranger station, at the Art Loeb trailhead, or at the work center parking lot.  Parking is limited, so please arrive early, consider carpooling, get dropped off at the start of the race, or allow time to walk in from surrounding parking areas in the forest or along the Brevard bike path.  Specific information will be included in the prerace guide emailed to all participants.

Fluid Stations

Fluids and support will be passed twice on the course - once within the first half mile and again at 2.3 miles in.

Time Limit

Race cutoff time is 2.5 hours.  2.5 hours equates to roughly a 25 minute average mile pace.  A quick hiker could complete the course in this time.

Low Impact Event

We aim to leave no impact on the forest as trail users.  Treat the land as it is your own - no littering, stay on the trail, and be kind to other trail users.  As we're working to reduce single use materials and keep a small environmental footprint, we appreciate you bringing your own water bottle or vessel if you plan to stop.
